Hydra Canons

Flanking Hydra Harbor are two bastions with cannons, intended to protect the harbor in time of war.

Eighteenth-century Hydriots used these cannons to ward off attacks from the Turkish fleet. Whereas Greek ships had between eight and twenty guns, a Turkish frigate carried up to eighty guns and a Turkish corvette ship up to thirty. Given the Turkish fleets superiority to the Greek, Hydra built these bastions as a protective measure in the event that Turkish ships got past the Greek ships.

In the 1800s, these cannons again protected Hydra during the Greeks’ war with the Turks. To the credit of the Greek fleet, the cannons were seldom used to defend the island.
