In late August, the Municipality of Hydra organizes a commemoration of the death of the first (and third) president of the Greek Republic, Hydriot admiral and hero of the Balkan Wars Pavlos Kondouriotis (April 9, 1855–August 22, 1935).

The lavish six-day celebration includes tours of the island’s museums, exhibitions, screenings, lectures, book presentations, and sporting events. On the last day,  a thanksgiving and a memorial service are held at the Cathedral, after which a wreath is laid at Admiral Kondouriotis’s statue and tomb.

Many visitors flock to the island for the festival, and the municipality invites officials, representatives of civil and military authorities, as well as representatives of literature and art.
