Clean Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα)

Clean Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα) marks the beginning of Lent in the Greek Orthodox Church. Following on the heels of Sunday’s Carnival festivities (and perhaps indulgences), the day traditionally entails eating only seafood and vegetable dishes (considered “pure” foods) and abstaining from meat (hence the overall holiday name Apokreas, meaning “abstinence from meat”). You’ll also see families flying kites up in the hill or anywhere they can catch wind.
